It is hard to focus our attention on anything that we want to learn or to recall information when we are suffering from high levels of stress or anxiety. While we can’t eliminate all stress from our lives, we can make an effort to do what we can about it. If you are constantly overwhelmed with stress and anxiety then your memory isn’t going to be what it should.
Too many details are going to slip through the cracks. You will find that during periods of time when you are the most stress is when you will also start to lose your keys, forget where you put documents, and even have to make extra shopping trips to the store because you forgot this or that. Take a good inventory of stress in your life and then evaluate what is causing it.
Your job may be the primary source of it and so you need to look at that. It today’s economy it may be tough to change jobs but see what you can do in that department. Talk to your boss too and find out what can be done to alleviate some of the stress you have right now with your current position.
You may have relationships that aren’t going well and they can be a huge source of tension and stress. Try some communication techniques to see if you can work them out. Otherwise you may have to decide if it is time to severe those relationships or at the very least to knock them down a notch or two.
Professional help may be a way to reduce stress and anxiety as well. Some people have changes in their life that they are overwhelmed by or unresolved concerns. Talking to a counselor or joining a support group may be what it takes to help reduce stress.
When the mind is clear then the memory is going to work better. When you sit down to learn something new you have to be able to focus on it. That is the only way for the mind to absorb the data so that it can be recalled later on. Stress is a distraction that causes the mind to wonder and that makes it harder to learn.
Studying more isn’t the answer either. If you aren’t focused on what you are looking at then it is just words on paper. You can stare at them for 4 hours and not recall as much as you would after an hour if you aren’t focused and if your memory isn’t sharp.
When you have high levels of stress, take a step back from what you are trying to learn or accomplish. Go for a brisk walk, evaluate the situation, and then try to stay focused and on task. You may have to redirect your mind back to the information that you are working on. The reminders will help you to stay on task and to improve your memory until you can reduce your stress levels enough for this to be a natural occurrence. |
